Last Minute Oscar Nominee Predictions

Before the nominations are announced I thought it would be fun to do a quick prediction of most of the categories.

Best Picture:

American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
Gone Girl
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

Cutting it down to nine is kind of difficult. Especially leaving out both Foxcatcher and Nightcrawler. And besides those 11 I would guess there isn’t many other films with an outside chance. Maybe Unbroken or Wild could knock one of those out or maybe we could have a 10 nominee year. But if there are 10 nominees I would see either Foxcatcher or Nightcrawler getting in over those.

Best Director:

Alejandro González Iñárritu – Birdman
Ava DuVernay – Selma
Clint Eastwood – American Sniper
Richard Linklater – Boyhood
Wes Anderson – The Grand Budapest Hotel

I could also see Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) or Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher) having a shot. Maybe David Fincher (Gone Girl) as well but Birdman and Boyhood are definitely getting nominated for directing and it’s hard to argue against the momentum that Grand Budapest Hotel and American Sniper have created lately.

Best Lead Actor

Benedict Cumberbatch – The Imitation Game
David Oyelowo – Selma
Eddie Redmayne – The Theory of Everything
Jake Gyllenhaal – Nightcrawler
Michael Keaton – Birdman

Ralph Fiennes and Steve Carell are other strong possibilities to consider and maybe even Bradley Cooper with unlikely odds but riding that American Sniper momentum. I’d also like to see Timothy Spall but I don’t know if that is likely.

Best Lead Actress

Amy Adams – Big Eyes
Felicity Jones – The Theory of Everything
Julianne Moore – Still Alice
Reese Witherspoon – Wild
Rosamund Pike – Gone Girl

I’m going with Amy Adams over Jennifer Aniston’s recent surprising chances. Also wish Marion Cotillard would have a better chance but at this point I don’t think it’s likely.

Best Supporting Actor

Edward Norton – Birdman
Ethan Hawke – Boyhood
J.K. Simmons – Whiplash
Mark Ruffalo – Foxcatcher
Robert Duval – The Judge

Very confident in the first four and Duval seems to be the kind of distinguished veteran nominee the Academy likes to consider.

Best Supporting Actress

Emma Stone – Birdman
Jessica Chastain – A Most Violent Year
Keira Knightlley – The Imitation Game
Patricia Arquette – Boyhood
Meryl Streep – Into the Woods

Not too sure about Jessica Chastain but I think I’m pretty confident in the other four.

Original Screenplay

Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler
Selma

Adapted Screenplay

American Sniper
Gone Girl
The Imitation Game
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

Pretty confident with most of these, especially the first four.

Best Animated Film

Big Hero 6
The Boxtrolls
How to Train Your Dragon 2
The Lego Movie

Not sure of the number of nominees either. And I’m not sure if something like The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is even eligible (if it is it should win! But it wouldn’t anyway)

Now to move into more difficult territory for predictions, especially some of the technical awards.

Best Foreign Film

Ida
Force Majeure
Leviathan
Tangerines
Wild Tales

Best Feature Documentary:

The Case Against 8
CITIZENFOUR
Keep on Keepin’ It
Last Days in Vietnam
Life Itself

Pretty confident with CITIZENFOUR and Life itself. Not too sure about the others. Last Days in Vietnam I want to say is a strong chance for a nomination as well.

Best Cinematography:

Birdman
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Selma

Birdman is of course getting a nomination. And I feel I may be off with the awards for Boyhood outside of Picture, Director, and Acting when leaving it out of a lot of technical awards because it may be a big front runner for best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actress. And a front runner like Boyhood should get more technical consideration than I’m probably giving it credit.

Best Art Direction:

Birdman
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Into the Woods

Maybe Mr. Turner and Selma can be others to consider here as well. Though I think Mr. Turner is going to be pretty undervalued. Not even predicting Timothy Spall’s fine performance for a nomination.

Best Costume Design:

The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Into the Woods
Maleficent
Mr. Turner

Maybe Big Eyes or Selma would be others to consider.

Best Makeup:

Foxcatcher
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
Maleficent

Not too sure if there will be five nominees. Not sure what else would make it. Maybe Mr. Turner?

Best Special Effects:

Birdman
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Godzilla
The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
Interstellar

I think this is a pretty solid set up. Birdman may be out of play but Oscar favorites tend to get a lot of credit here if Hugo and Life of Pie are any indication.

Best Editing:

American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Imitation Game
Selma

Nightcrawler, Gone Girl, Whiplash, and a few others have a good chance at this as well. I again may be overestimating Selma’s strength for Oscar nominations but I think it’s going to be stronger than some may expect.

Best Sound Mixing:

American Sniper
Birdman
Interstellar
Unbroken
Whiplash

Sound awards tend to be hard to nail down. Plus I think stuff like Fury, The Hobbit, and Into the Woods may have a chance.

Best Sound Editing:

American Sniper
Interstellar
Into the Woods
The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
Unbroken

Kind of the same with the Sound Mixing awards.

Best Score:

Gone Girl
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
The Theory of Everything

Maybe it’s a little too much to suggest two Desplat scores and Selma feels like my go to nominee to fill some spots even though it didn’t seem to get screeners out for a lot of guild awards.

Best Song:

“Everything is Awesome” – The Lego Movie
“Glory” – Selma
“Lost Stars” – Begin Again
“Yellow Flicker Beat” The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I

Only thing I’m pretty certain of is “Glory” from Selma and other than that I’m not even certain how many nominees there will be. “Mercy Is” from Noah and “Big Eyes” from Big Eyes are other two that may have a chance.
